Chapter 43 (cont.)

Boobs, Butts & Beyond: Hello, Old Friend!

“My 21st was the day the Deer Park was due to close for remodeling. I have to tell you, that was a crazy night. My friends and I went to Grotto’s around 4 PM after classes, and proceeded to get me drunk. Since we knew the bartender at Grotto’s, we went there first. After pounding an Irish Car Bomb we started to do a few shots. The idea wasn't to get plastered then, but later that night. Well I think we left Grotto’s around 8 PM and went to Kate’s. I had a bit more to drink, and well, I thought we’d close the bar there…but then we started to see cops flying down the road.

Well, the rumor was a riot was starting at Deer Park. It gets fuzzy here, but I remember seeing the cops closing Main Street and hundreds of people outside, it was like a block party and people were standing around drinking. (Digger’s Note: More about the ‘riot’ in our Deer Park chapter!)

I actually ran into an old friend I worked with at a restaurant, and found out she had become a stripper. Well, my friends told her it was my 21st and we all went back to my friends’ place in the Courtyards. When we got there, I proceeded to get my dance from my old coworker and after that, we drank some more. Now I blank out. I was told that I puked, passed out and was moved to the couch…well, when I woke up, I was in a chair not a couch, and had the biggest hangover of my life. God, it was a great night.”

Behind the Bar

“One time my freshman year, Spring of '92, I was at the Delta Tau Delta house (Digger’s Note: Now the Alpha Phi house!) I was hammered and behind the bar in the basement at a crowded party. I had to go to the bathroom, but was either too drunk or lazy or didn't want to give up the good real estate…I unzipped and went behind the bar while smiling and pounding my beer. Thankfully, I was shielded behind the bar so nobody lost their vision by seeing my junk.”

The Gift That Kept On Giving

“As a housewarming present, one of my friends built a Beer Pong table for me and my roommates…complete with hinges so we could fold it in the closet! Before our first party, we all signed the table and wrote the rules of the game on it in permanent marker. Awww, memories.”

Chunder Struck

“Well, we were at Kate's one early evening, I remember as soon as my boyfriend at the time and I walked in, I ordered a round of Cuervo shots for everyone...over and over again. This was a Sunday night. We got home, I was fine -- no puking for me -- ‘Yay!’ I thought.

OOOHHHH, NO. 7:30 AM was the first wake-up call. Usually I would get sick once and be all better. Not after this disaster. 8:00 AM was Round Two. 8:30, 9:00, 9:30. I'm not kidding, it was CLOCKWORK. Eventually I was placed on the living room sofa with a trashcan, and was left to recover while my boyfriend went out somewhere with his roommate. Nice, right?”

In-State

“My 21st birthday fell during Winter Session in 1998, and I lived in lovely Towne Court at the time. Only two of my friends were around for Winter Session, so they took me to the ever popular State Line Liquors at midnight, and took pictures of me buying my first beers and getting carded. Afterwards, we hung out and drank at my apartment for the rest of the night. Despite not doing the traditional 21 shots, I had a really good time and it's something I will never forget.”

The Best There Was

“Just about every other Thursday night, on first floor Pencader F, we'd have a half-keg of Milwaukee's Best. At $24 per keg, it was the best bang for your buck. There was a cheaper option, but it was Piels…yuck. ‘Beast’ was pretty gnarly, but a cut above Piels!  If we wanted to splurge, we'd get Budweiser. We actually had a guy that owned his tap…we sure felt like kings because of that!”

Games, Beers, and Cheers

“The fact that I only needed to drink two beers freshman year to be legally drunk never kept me from playing games. It is Beirut, NOT Beer Pong! We played Quarters, or the more exciting Speed Quarters (two or three shot glasses going around at a time), Cops and Robbers (which had something to do with cards), Golf...I can't remember the rules.

I knew someone who had a Jenga game with different instructions written on the pieces (“Drink One,” “Give One,” “Pound a Beer,” “Kiss Your Neighbor,” etc.) And then there were the weird circle games like Viking, Thumper, and the Name Game! The card games were handy in the dorms since they were relatively quiet. The RAs would stand by our doors and wait to hear the ‘PING’ of a quarter landing in a shot glass. Busted!

My 21st b-day was May 20, 1993. It started out sort of quiet because it happened to fall on the series finale of Cheers. I started at the Deer Park with three friends, drank heavily, and felt sorry for myself because NO ONE was out! My sad little party moved down to the Balloon, where I was so happy to get in for the first time. Then, like magic, everyone started showing up (duh, Cheers was over). I remember drinking Jäger, Mind Erasers, random shots and nasty beer.

Somehow, we wound up at a party on Main Street, where I puked off of the balcony. My friend kept yelling, ‘Thar she blows!’ to warn the people down below. My friends decided to get me home around 2 AM or so, and started walking / carrying me down Main Street. A Public Safety officer pulled over and said, ‘Is she all right?’ My friends whisper to me to say, ‘Yes, I'm fine.’ Which I dutifully do. And the Public Safety officer drove us back to the Towers! I hibernated for a day, and went to Denny's the next night at 1 AM.”
