Chapter 35 (cont.)

Sleepus Interruptus: Bandiculous

“1997 to 1999, I lived in the University Garden apartments on Beverly Road, right off of Elkton across from the Eagle Diner, and down the street from the gas station. It was a sweet location because it was within walking distance to practically everything. One major drawback was that the marching band practiced every Saturday morning before the football games on the field behind the Amy E. du Pont music building.”

(Digger’s Note: There’s a parking deck there now, and Eagle Diner is gone!)

Take a Seat: Cover Up

“In our house on Ashley Road, the couches seemed like they'd been there forever. The girls who lived there before us claim they got the couches from the boys who lived here before them, who got them from the previous residents…and so on. They're large and bulky, and it seemed it would be impossible to get them back through the doorway. We had two or three sets of couch covers and king-sized sheets that we threw over the ripped foam cushions in rotation. I can't imagine what had been done on the actual cushions over the years.”

Have it Their Way

“I lived in Main Street Court my junior year, '01 - '02.  It was great except the townies who liked to show off their loud, pimped out cars at Burger King next door EVERY Friday and Saturday night!”

DelaWeather: Benny and the Mess

“Blizzard of '96, yeah I was at UD…a junior living on Benny Street! I had a friend of mine try to drive me down Elkton Road to a friend’s place. I had to walk part of the way.  He said that he then got stuck on Benny Street a few houses away from our house and had to leave his car. Those were the days!”

Boobs, Butts & Beyond: Wait For It…

“I lived in Ivy Hall, building G. Every morning I'd sit on that stoop (except when it was really cold) and mix up a glass of red Kool-Aid (in my stolen 'Honey Brown' pint glass) for breakfast, and think about the world. Ok, well…not really, but more likely we'd be BBQing that evening when everyone got home from class, and the beers would be flowing. More often than not when we had parties, the people would end up out on that lawn there whether they were puking, fighting, or just hanging out.

We also smashed a vacuum cleaner on that tree right outside. It was an old vacuum that my roommate’s parents gave us for the apartment and one day after a party the thing caught fire, and started smoking and shorting out...or whatever an angry vacuum cleaner does. So what did we do, we of course took it outside and threw it on the path so the place wouldn’t catch fire. Now safe, it seemed like a good idea to smash the shit out of it on that big old tree since we knew it would never be fixed. It was like that scene from Office Space when they destroy the fax machine.

Another time, we emerged from building G the day after a heavy drink session where my roommate hooked up with some crusty hippie chick. After they banged, she went back to the adjacent building to crash with her friends. As we left G a few hours later, my roommate saw her in the doorway of F and they made eye contact. He instructed me to run out to the car with him, as if we were in a hurry. So he pushed the door open and began to jog out to the car expecting me to follow. I didn't. I took my time, walking slowly, as he ran in front of me and I said to the girl, ‘Oh, hey...I’m sure we'll see you again! Right?’ I didn't think she thought it was as funny as I did.”

Campus Critter: For the Dogs

“I lived in Victoria Mews for a short period of time. It was alright. Everyone lives there because they want to have a dog, and it’s one of those few places in Newark that allows large dogs. All of the dogs would play together in the courtyard, it was like having a dog park in my backyard.”

DelaWeather: Unplowed Court

“We lived in Towne Court…in the half that was technically NOT Newark. You could tell where the dividing line was when it snowed, because the Newark plow would stop there and the private company would start (they did a crappy job plowing). When we had a bad storm, we might lose power, but the other half of Towne Court still had it!”
